The type 3 front ends DO rust out. Look under the rubber mounting
pads after you take it off. Good ones are occasionally valuable.

Believe it or not, when the heater systems are working the air they
can put out is VERY hot. The thermostat system you are talking about
(not the engine cooling thermostat, etc) mixes in cool air to get the
temp down to something tolerable. In so doing it ups the volume of
hot air, and there is a real benefit to this.

For those of you who don't know what we're talking about, there is a
mixing box on either side of the nose of the tranny. These get input
from the heat exchangers as well as from two 1" cool air hoses.
Inside each box there is a bellows thermostat similar to that in the
engine cooling system. This expands and contracts to control the flow
of cool air into the mixing box.

If you drive with good heat exchangers but no cool air hoses and use
the heater, then the thermostats will open and dump hot air outside.
Since no cool air come in when this happens the temp in the mixing
box can get high enough to pop the bellows thermostats. The fresh air
hoses are important. Make sure yours are in place.
