Matt (fellow iCBMer) and I went to the Portland car show last weekend. I had a pretty good look at the Subaru engines and there was a stripped one, attached to the tranny, on display. After acquiring a yardstick I made some rough measurements. Later, at home, I measured the engine bay of my Squareback to see if it would fit. The Subaru engine should be able to squeeze in. The front-to-back distance measured to be the tightest, with only an inch between body and engine. My main concern was the depth -- unless one were to modify the oil pan the engine would be sitting close to the ground...and this is for a stock height vehicle! The conversion may work better on a Fasty or Notch, as one could make a modified engine cover that is 'pocketed' -- looks like an upside-down pizza box -- so the engine could be ever so slightly raised to allow for more ground clearance. It couldn't be raised too much else shifting becomes difficult.
