Toby Erkson and I discussed this about a year ago at some length. Looks like Toby beat me to the reply. I was going to say that noone had done this conversion yet, unless Toby was holding out on us, but it sounds like he is not.... 8^). I agree with Toby that the Super Beetle rack might be the easiest rack to use for this conversion, but any small manual rack (Mustang II, etc) would probably be ok. The geometry of the system would need to be worked out, but us Dark Siders have already screwed that up with lowered front ends and custom rims with the wrong offset..... 8^) This conversion would be more for show then anything else. The stock steering box works fine if it is maintained and adjusted properly. With our lightweight (relatively) cars and tall tires and such, the precision of the rack & pinion system would be pretty much lost. Of course if you have gone the fully over to the Dark Side, with a high HP engine, fat tires, lowered and stiffened suspension, etc, etc, etc....it might make some difference....... Just my 3 cents.....would like to try it some day, but have lots of other more pressing projects like rocker rust, rear fender rust, no interior, etc....
