>The old VWs (pre 1961, maybe earlier) sent the air used to cool the cylinders on to the cabin for heating. Of course, this brought on several interesting fumes, gases and smells, and this heater system was called "gas chambers". The connection, well you figure it out yourself. > You are referring to the "stale-air" heating system, used until about '61 for 36hp and the first 40hp engines on Buses. Bugs I do not know the end date. My '55 Bus has this setup and although the heat output leaves much to be desired compared to a solid Type 3 setup, there are no strange fumes, it does smell like engine in the cabin, etc.. I guess if you had a dirty engine, you might smell something but then you probably have other problems, like insufficent air-cooling. - Everett Barnes '55 Kombi, '63 Notchback ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
