Don't most cars do this? I suspect that at least part of the motivation is to avoid CO buildup.

It is interesting to note that the Corvair takes engine heat from the chambers enclosing the push rod tubes and exhaust manifolds.  The only other air cooled engines I am familiar with are for aircraft, and those usually take heated air from cuffs wrapped around exhaust pipes.
