I suspect that at least part of the motivation is to avoid CO buildup. ==================================================== It is interesting to note that the Corvair takes engine heat from the chambers enclosing the push rod tubes and exhaust manifolds. The only other air cooled engines I am familiar with are for aircraft, and those usually take heated air from cuffs wrapped around exhaust pipes.
