[T3] Type III, T3, et al

<x-rich>Folks, I'm having a wonderful time with this thread. Thank you!

Having come to the list only a month or so ago, and <underline>not
yet</underline> having returned to the road with my own Type III after
a hiatus that is approaching 15 years, I have regularly been jolted by
the apparent abbreviation to T3. I assumed that it was something that
had happened in evolution of the Type III culture during my absence.
And it may be. It does seem to run afoul of the way VW appears to have
designated code for its various models and variants [sic] (perhaps I
need to say "subdivisions of models").

I will continue to refer to my '70-'73 Squarebacks as Type III for my
own certainty. Hmmm, I am the guy on my fraternity alumni association's
governing board who refuses most steadfastly to abbreviate to "frat."
How does one abbreviate the principles and operation of brotherhood?
The Type III culture does have some of the attributes of fraternity.

I won't apologize, but I realize you probably didn't need another
intellectual in the engine room!
