Small changes are not important, but you want to be sure about TDC. 
That's the spot that you're shooting for. Use the timing light to 
verify that the mech advance is working; you should see the timing 
change as you up the RPMs with the throttle. If it doesn't then you 
have a problem that must be fixed (I can rebuild your dist.) I 
wouldn't get too excited about overheating, just keep working to get 
things sorted out and back to where they should be

No, over rich is over rich. Both timing and mixture need to be right.

Consistent, but low. Is there any chance that the compression on this 
engine has been lowered? It is possible that rich running has worn 
out the pistons, rings, and cylinders, but it is also possible that 
the low compression is just due to excessive carbon buildup from 
never getting warmed up. Is your thermostatic cooling system all 
there and working.
