Yes, logical, but I usually take a hacksaw and cut a slot in one end of the rod parallel to the flaps. Not only is this permanent, but it also allows you to stick a screwdriver in there and tweak it slightly to make sure that it still moves freely. The rear end attaches next to the operating rod, while the front end hooks over the pivot for the BELL CRANK. Is it possible that you have attached it to the clamp at the other end of the same operating rod? The purpose of the spring is to take play out of the system and eliminate rattle that would eventually cause parts to wear out. > Warm-up is SOOOO easy now.
