It's a flat fiber-reinforced rubber disc that connects your steering 
shaft with your steering box and allows for flex in the system. The 
Bugcrap ones are more or less plain rubber and prone to early failure. 
The VW ones have what appears to be hemp rope or something embedded 
inside and can hold out for a good long time.
