I should have noticed you are 'downunder'; it's pretty tricky on a twin carb (you really notice the ease in FI). In the 60's, VW supplied a great tool in the tool roll; it had a small spark-plug socket on the end, with the rubber core to hold the plug, while the rest of the shaft was about 3/8" tube with cross-drilled holes for a 'tommy bar' for turning it. You are right under the carbs with the front right one particularly. A universal joint plug tool is handy for removing, but you can't replace them very easily that way, even with the ones that have a spring round the joint. Dave.
