Re: [T3] Sound proofing material

Hi Naomi (and all),

After pulling up the carpet and tar boards in my 73 fasty project and
sanding/derusting/painting the floorpans I found some dense carpet padding
to use as insulation. It's the multi-colored spongy stuff that's pressed
into a sheet and backed with some sort of mesh/plastic coating...I cut it
to match the floorpan contour and so far it has worked well. A side
benefit is that it absorbs water well, which is an added benefit for my car
as I seem to have a water leak somewhere (clogged air box drain tubes?).
If water enters the car I simply remove the carpet padding (it's not glued
in) and hang it to dry. The stuff is very cheap and seems to absorb road
noise pretty well. I would have liked to find something a little more
dense, but so far this stuff has worked well. I'm going to remove the old
insulation from the rear trunk area next (water leak there too, smells
musty), and hopefully I'll be able to find padding with a greater
weight/density...if not, I'll use the carpet padding there as well. I
bought enough to handle both floor pans, and the front trunk as well and it
may have run me $5 at the hardware store.

Obvoiusly I'll also be taking care of the water leaks, too! :-)

Subject: [T3] Sound proofing material

Was wondering if anyone had a good inexpensive replacement material to¬î$Æsound proofing to put on the floor pans, underneath the carpet. The
previous black cardboard-like material with Styrofoam in the middle isn't
something we would like to put back in the car...especially since it's in
chunks.

Also, the material from the back shelf is really dry, brittle and faded
from
the sun. So any ideal material replacement thoughts would be a great help,
as I would really like to get the carpet and seats back in there.

Thanks!
