I've replaced mine, but only in conjunction with an overhaul. I suppose you could push back the boots enough to get the air distributor out, but you'd have a hell of a time getting all the bolts out Û(Ý manifolds in place. It's just easier to pull the manifolds and do it that way. You can check the FI injector seals, too, while they're out. I'm not sure what you're talking about rubber vs. fabric. The original stuff is fabric-covered rubber, although most are more like fabric-covered hard rubber by now. I don't think the standard bug ones fit, so you're stuck with OEM ones, if you can find them, or you can do like I did. I went down to the local industrial hardware place, manifold in hand and bought some red rubber steam hose of appropriate ID. It was like $7 a foot, but one foot made 4 boots with some to spare. I finally got the real items after about 5 years, but the old steam hose was still elastic. Use some appropriate lube on the manifold tubes to make sliding the boots into place a lot easier.
