[T3] basic info on type 3 requested

driver here."

Sounds like you answered your own question here. You may not know cars,
but you know yourself better than we do, I'd wager, and probably know
more or less what you want, in terms of level of attractiveness, stock
vs. modified, reliability, etc. I might add that you want to avoid
serious rust, which is the hardest thing for a beginner to deal with,
and the most expensive in terms of time and/or money. Mechanicals are
relatively easy to take care of. I could reel off lots of advice here,
but vw advice is always better when it relates to specifics. You should
contact somebody from the list near you; or make a friend who knows
aircooled vws. Aircooled VW owners are a friendly bunch, for the most
part. For me, one of the main attractions of getting my first acvw (a
bus, in this case), was that I knew I could tap into a network of
helpful, friendly, and knowledgable people. I'd also seen John 愬P!OW TO KEEP YOUR VW ALIVE, A GUIDE FOR THE COMPLEAT IDIOT, aka, the
"idiot book," and it gave me the confidence to jump in--and confidence
is mostly what people need, in my experience, since this stuff is
definitely not rocket science. Sticktuitiveness, enthusiasm, patience:
these things you need, but moderate intelligence is all you need in the
brains department -- I do alright.

Where should I be looking for this particular type of car (I live on the
east coast).

Hmm, I'd limit my search to the east coast, then. : ) Seriously,
however, it depends on your time frame. If you want it really soon, you
may have to search more widely. But the occasional type3 does turn up
in the Sun or the Post. I'd be remiss if I failed to mention checking
out the info at WWW.vwtype3.org. : )

"Should I try to get one with a manual or an autormatic transmission?"

That's a preference item, really, with pros and cons for each. My
prejudice is for manual; and you'd learn it fast enough.

"Are there any vw clubs inthe washington dc/baltimore area?"

Well, there's this list, for one. BTW, People for DC never mention
Baltimore; but people in Baltimore try to defend the traditional
alphabetical twin city naming rule, and call it the Baltimore/Washington
area (or just Balto/Wash). Where are you?

"How much should I be willing to pay on a car that won't require an
amazing amount of maintenance."

It depends. However, despite the relative rareness and incredible
coolness of the type 3, it's not all that sought after, so it isn't an
expensive car. That's all I can say without knowing about a specific
car and the motivation of the buyer. If you wait around a lot; you can
get a better "deal"; but waiting is a cost, too. Do you want a car you
can start driving immediatly? Or, would you rather have a project that
you can restore in your evenings for a while? For a beginner, the
former is probably a good idea; the latter would work out if you are
prepared for a little more frustration. In either case, I'd advise you
to 顎EGe, and ask the list for lots of advice.
