Re: [T3] vw air compressors

I'm not sure aluminum is all bad, but there's certainly some
compressors out there that won't have a very long life in continuous
use. There's all cast iron, the traditional material(heavy, too).
There's aluminum blocks with cast iron sleeves and there's
all-aluminum with plated cylinder bores. The last are generally the
oilless cheapies you see in Harbor Freight and the like, generally
direct drive(no belt). They have a nylon or teflon piston seal that
wears and the internals are generally alloy, too. They have a number
of advantages, they don't leak oil if they're tipped over, one guy can
usually horse them around and they're cheap. Also, no possible oil
contamination, although you still have to have a water trap on them,
so that's not a really big deal. Mine gets the job done, when I get
some place permanent, hopefully not too long from now, I'll get a
large cast iron stationary beast. The aluminum with cast iron sleeve
compressors looked good, much lighter than all cast iron and had a
higher rating than my oilless, but won't fit in the back of my car and
would leak oil if tipped over to haul around. ë žCu need depends
on your circumstances, financial and otherwise.
