Here's a reference I kept:-

"How about an air-compressor made from a VW engine:  2 cylinders for
driving it, and 2 for pumping air!
 Dunn-Wright in Anderson, South Carolina, USA makes kits that convert VW
engines into compressors by making them run on 2 cylinders and compressing
air on the other two. The compressor puts out some SERIOUS air like
50-something CFM at 125+ PSI.   Kits are $200 to $300.
