Ned: I just replaced the torsion bushings in my '65 Variant. I would advise that you tackle the job yourself. With the Bentley manual (I also used the Haynes's manual in conjunction with the Bentley), it will be much easier than you think. Personally, I would advise against taking another junk yard front end just because of the torsion bushings. One, you will have much more work on your hands with such a replacement. Two, that junkyard front end is there for a reason -- i.e., most likely because its owners were not as conscientious as you are with maintaining your car. My point is that you may end up with a front beam in worse shape than your old one. If nothing else, read through the procedures in the manuals and price the bushings. Then, if you overcome your fears of the black magic of the front end, then set aside a Saturday and go for it. You won't regret it. I didn't.
