AT type 3s are not at all rare. The only way one could come to that conclusion would be if you had really never seen very many type 3s of either kind. I have 2 ATs currently and one in the past (RIP.) If this is the article that I am thinking of, it also includes a comment that his shift lever still has the Reverse lockout (have to lift to get out of reverse) working. I have never seen one of these that did not still work.
