You need to pull the engine and tin off to see exactly what you have or don't have. Then compare that with the photo in the Bentley. It might be possible to do this with the engine in the car but the tin must come off or you can't do ANYTHING. It seems to me that the PO removed all the related thermostatic control system. You need to remove the cylinder tin to see if the flaps that are in the fan housing are shut or open. OR, you can run the eninge and put your hand near the bottom of the cylinders ( where the thermostat would be) and see if you feel any air. Try reving the engine. Be careful because things heat up quickly if the air flow IS blocked. This test will tell you if you are or are not getting airflow to the cylinders/heads, and thus if the the flaps are shut or open. Try the same on the other side (#3 & #4). IMHO, I would pull the engine to install this stuff if that is what ultimately needs to happen. It is much easier and you check how the thermostat opens and closes the flaps as it heats up. If adjustments are needed, it is far easier to do when the engine is out of the car.
