MIke I may be giving you stuff that you already know but thats what you get. The thermostat is metallic and has louvers in it so that when it gets hot, it expands. When it expands, it pushes a rod axailly upwards. This rod goes between cylinders one and two. The rod is then pivoted by a mechanical device, which is connected to another rod lying horizontal (with spring attached), changing the direction from up/down to front/back. This pivoting device is under the cooling tin in the same location as the oil cooler, but on the rigth side of the engine. This front/back movement pulls/pushes on the flaps that allow cool air to flow over the piston banks. THe two flaps (R/L) are in the 'shoulders' of the aluminum fan housing, coupled by a rod that twists. To make adjustments to the cooling of your car, you can move the thermostat bracket up/down, twist the thermostat so the rod goes into it further, and/or make adjustments where the rod connects to the pivot (barrel nut). As for parts if you are missing all of them, I would think that the lower bracket is the same for all types. The pivot and horizontal rod is not, though the vertical rod may be. The spring can be obtained at a hardware store. If you don't have the flaps, don't worry about things till it gets cold then try to get your hands on an entire spare engine with all cosmetics. It sounds like you already got the thermostat. Hope this helps. If you don't have a Bentley, get one as everyone who has one will reccomend. Good luck BE ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
