Over here there was the original VW fitted one, which had a cross-bar and sturdy side plates that fixed to the bumper mounts, with a central brace that bolted to a large backing plate on the rear panel. A second design used a V of shaped tube which mounted on the bumper supports and bolted through the rear wheel-well panel. It also had a centre brace to the rear panel. With this one, you had to remove the tow-bar (trailer hitch) if you wanted to take out the engine though. I think it was made by Witter, but I'm not sure. With sound bodywork, there should be little problem towing with either, but now many are rusty, particularly around bumper mounts, it's worth checking thoroughly. The Type 4 (411/412) had a towbar which bolted to the front gearbox mount area, I believe. Tow-bars are very common in the UK; I guess you chaps in the US had big trunks as standard so didn't need the facility as much. Dave.
