Just as another data point, Australian type 3s (built IN Australia) had rubber with the metal in it. Many now sport the Cal look because (a) it's cheaper and (b) the original style rubber is very expensive and difficult to find here. In response to the original question, I recently got a West Coast Metric seal for the front windscreen, which has been fine so far...
