Sorry if my 2 plus 2 made 5. I guess my memory over 30 years may have (has) suffered, and not being a local makes a difference. But, there is usually time for manufacturers to develop appropriate systems, and VW are normally 2 or 3 years ahead of compulsory changes, certainly in Europe. I'd have to dip into the archives in a big way to find out, though. M27 extras code (compliance with US exhaust emission standards) is quoted as from 312 2000 001 for US West Coast, FI Fastbacks and Squarebacks. That must have been the time the Beetle became a 49-state car (or was it 48 at that time?). Dave. I guess this is a quibble, but were would we be without our quibbles? Type 3 FI started out in 68. At this time there were no separate pollution regs for California, so we really can't blame this on CA. The first year that VW had to produce different type 3s for CA was 72. I suspect that from that time on CA and Federal autos were different.
