It's the outer husk of the coconut, which they strip off, leaving just a 'beard'. I knew it was in doormats, but didn't realise it was that curly stuff in the air-cleaner. I guess if bits got loose, it could be serious if they were wire. And the coir absorbs oil, to give it a large sticky surface area to catch dust. Are the seat stuffings coir too? Dave.
