I can't say if your radio problem is related, but a VR that is making irregular clicking sounds is probably dying. The real test is to measure what the regulating voltage is. Do it this way: Drive the car to get everything charged up to equlibrium. Park, but don't shut off the engine. Connect a voltmeter across the battery and measure the voltage. Watch the voltage rise as you speed up the engine; the voltage will rise and then level off. The voltage that it levels off at is the regulating voltage. If the voltage is 14.1-14.4 V then this is like new. If the voltage is 13.5-14.1 V then it is dying or marginal. If the voltage is less than 13.5 V you should replace the VR. I recommend genuine Bosch. I stock these along with a special version that I have modified for better life. I have not yet developed my electronic version.
