I've wondered about that as well. I have kept mine installed, however. I believe it helps to keep heat from the tranny from entering the engine compartment as well as reduce engine noise. Or it keeps engine heat from entering the tranny area. It is used to support some of the various "pipes" like wiring harness, fuel hose and accelerator cable so you would need to find a way of supporting all of this instead of on the engine.
