[T3] ID on type 3?

Volks,
I'm on the type2 list and couldn't figure out how to post to this list
without subscribing - i hope this works. 
Anyway, in my search for an engine for my bus, i came across a 1971 vw
with VIN 311273... or something like that - little two-door car with a
sloping back (fastback?) the guy that owns it says its an "SD-4".  its
fuel injected/4-speed.  Any of you cats know what the name of this car
is and how rare is it?  Thanx alot.
