This is a common misconception, and may depend on what people mean by incompatable. In my office, I have a small bottle that is 1/3 DoT 5, 1/3 DoT 4, and 1/3 air. It has been there since 1970. I use it periodically to show people how the two fluids don't really mix and will separate rather quickly if you shake them up together. So the two fluids are not misible, but I do not consider this to mean incompatable. While there is no harm in mixing the two, the fact remains that one only gets the full benefit out of the Silicone DoT-5 brake fluid if the old fluid is removed as completely as possible.
