This is where Keith set his timing with his dual carb notch, so I did the same. Let me ask you, when I'm driving on the highway, I can hear a low ticking coming off the guard rails. Not pinging (I've had that - bad gas). I can't tell with the engine cover off what it is because its so noisy in general and my ear is untrained and unfamiliar with a properly tuned engine.. And when I'm at idle, all I hear is the exhaust steadily puttering. I can't make the sound out. Maybe I'm getting too paranoid? Checking my valve clearance this weekend. Also, every now and then, especially when warming up, I get little backfires. Tiny and occassional, but sort of like a miss. Before I put in the new distributors and sparks, when I was up at Keith's he noted the car was too rich because it was so sluggish starting up and then noticed only two cylinders were firing. I figured this had to do with fouled up plugs and once the car had a few minutes to warm up, all four cylinders were running again. I have the new distrib and the carbs synced but every now and then....pop pop. I'm using Castrol SAE 30 oil, which is pretty heavy, but that was a four hour drive nonstop. I guess I'm wondering if backfire is a sign of over-richness or what. I have new plugs in now, and a new used centrif/vac distributor timed at 3 ATDC. God only knows how long it'll be before the sparks are munged up since I cant get any idea what the proper mixture on my carbs is. Long process of trial and error. Any comments would be useful.
