Sorry, but this is wrong. The free play is there to assure that the brakes release completely every time. It has nothing to do with uneven braking, everything to do with avoiding overheating brakes. Of course, one could worry about the possibly uneven braking that overheated brakes might give, but that would be ignoring the larger problem to concentrate on a rather trivial detail.
