Pre-ignition is simply the fuel burning by something other that the spark from the spark plug. Detonation (or pinging or knocking) is just that -- the fuel exploding, not burning. It's the darker side of pre-ignition ;) Pre-ignition will cause a loss of power, as will detonation, however, detonation is far more damaging to an engine than pre-ignition.
