At first, I thought that my tach/dwell meter died. However, what happened was that cylinder #2 stopped firing. I was baffled (still am), but seemed to have found the problem. It seems that cylinders 1 and 2 were getting too much gas. This caused the plugs to foul with soot and eventually misfire and in the case of #2 stop firing altogether. I pulled the brand new plugs, cleaned them, then pulled the carbs and cleaned them. I reinstalled everything and opened the throttle control valves to 1 1/4 turns and adjusted the idle screw linkage ala Haynes. This worked much better and I even eliminated the smoke (too much gas, not oil) that I was beginning to see lately. Some of the steps I took in diagnosing this were: With the car running, pulled the #2 plug wire off the distributor cap to see if that cylinder was receiving spark. (it was) By doing this and finding consistent spark, you should be ruling out any distributor problems. Pulled the new plug (installed the day before) and checked for black soot. Found black soot. Cleaned the plug, rechecked the gap and reinstalled. Cleaned, adjusted and resynched the carbs as described above. One other problem I found was that I have two different carbs. The left on is a PDSIT 32-3 and the right one is a PDSIT32-34. I have an extra "set" of cleaned and rebuilt carbs. I checked them and they also are numbered the same way. I would assume the carb numbers should match. If so, I will hunt for a matching set at the Munich Oldtimer Messe this spring. Sorry, Cayson, for the rambling, but I thought that you may benefit from how I approached a similar problem.
