Yeah, a hot day isn't too fun for the engine and couple that with any hills (or Dallas traffic during "rush hour") and you've got a good formula for a panting hot engine. 65-70mph @ 37+mpg on an engine with more cc's? I don't believe it. Is the fuel injection after-market and running very lean? Is the engine from a Subaru? I'm willing to bet the tires are not stock (smaller in diameter), thus throwing off the odometer and resulting mph/mpg statistics. I'm definitely gonna need a LOT more information on this '71's engine/tranny. I'm sure there will be a lot of engine builders, and probably the VW engineers themselves, who would like to know how this wonderful creation came to be!
