My Haynes manual doesn't even mention it. If the threads in the case are stripped, then the only real cure is to rebuild the engine and, while the case is bare, have inserts put in the stud holes. This is a big enough job that there is no point in just doing one, do all 16. You should have a shop who is familiar with the work do this; I send mine to RIMCO in CA. They do good work for a very reasonable price. I do it on every engine rebuild, just as reassurance and insurance. This is covered in detail in: How to Hotrod Volkswagen Engines by Bill Fisher published by H. P. Books, Tucson, AZ, 1970 (excellent book, well written and researched) Anyone considering doing an engine rebuild should buy a copy of this book BEFORE they start or buy any parts.
