We have it a bit easier, with toughened glass screens that are not
as prone to cracking, but explode into tiny pieces if they do break
(had a side window do that as I removed the lifter channel -
spectacular).

The aluminium trim MUST be fitted after putting the rubber round the
glass, but before putting it in the car.  Put some soapy water on
the groove, and start at the corner.  Bend down the edge of the
rubber seal gradually, easing the trim strip into the groove.  Work
each way from that corner, then do the other one.  Finally fit the
sliding strips that join it.

To fit into the car, put thick cord round the groove, and overlap a
foot or two.  I like to paint soapy water on with a brush, but I
know some don't approve.  If you are going to use sealer, I
understand it is a bad thing to use any lubricant to fit.  Feed the
ends of the cord into the car, and place the screen in the hole.
Have a helper exert gentle pressure on the outside while you use the
cord to peel back the rubber edge to go inside the frame.  Pull the
cord parallel to the window, so it has to pull the edge inside.  Do
the bottom edge first, one side to the corner then the other.  As
the side rubber comes inside the flange, use gentle pressure to keep
the window up in the opening.  Once the top rubber is inside the
flange, you may need to seat it finally with some firm hand
pressure.  Be very careful when pushing the glass to prevent
cracking; old laminated glass can be a bit sensitive to being
distorted.

It isn't a difficult job, but you may prefer to let someone else
take the risk!
