Toby, I had the same thing happen to me with my rear right wheel when I was driving my '65 Beetle down from San Jose to LA at a healthy 65 mph. I didn't hear any noise, but all of a sudden my car started shaking side to side rather violently. I pulled over as quickly as possible (this is at NIGHT) and cut of a huge semi hauling cars, and many other people. I didn't bottom out, but my wheel was about two hundred yards behind with lug bolts strewn between it and the rest of the now three wheeled car. Welllllllll...... I was stranded on the side of the road for a few hours since nobody in their right mind would stop for someone in the middle of darkness, except, of course, a VW nut. Thank God! She tried to help me out, but a towbar was useless, so she dropped me off at a friends of hers who had a million parts just laying around. He gave me a drum to get by with and we switched the drums. Nothing else had to be done. Of course, this was a big surprise and had nothing to do with the axle bolt, like yours. However, when I got new tires a few months later, they tried balancing them. Didn't work since the rims wher completely out of true. My guess is that it was from this little accident. So, moral of the story, make sure your lug bolt threads are in good shape. If not, be prepared for a rather wild ride--and some wheel truing. Don't let this happen to you!!! You'll either have to be put on a flat bed, or bring the parts to your crippled loved one!
