A helicoil is a coil spring wound from wire that has a diamond cross section. So it winds nicely into a standard 60 deg tapped hole (that happens to have a wierd diameter) and leaves a threaded hole inside itself. It is the standard fix for a threaded hole. Shavings are not a problem here. Most of them come out the bottom of the hole and the rest can be cleaned off the top by wiping carefully.
