Okay, I'm driving down the road and after a short couple of miles I start hearing this squealing/squalling sound. Very hard to pinpoint the location but I have a strong feeling it's coming from the right side of the car. I can't tell if it's located in the front or back. It only happens while the car is moving, mostly in the 45mph-60mph range but has made noise at higher speeds and definitely makes noise while braking -- generally louder but not always. It is not the engine! --> I will take the car out of gear, both by just pressing the clutch and also by putting the car in neutral and just coast, the noise is still there. I can rev the engine or let it idle down and the noise doesn't change (I thought it could be an alternator bearing or my fan pulley). When the noise occurs I can sometimes make is stop by releasing the gas peddle a little bit...stepping on the gas rarely makes it stop the noise. When it's making the noise and I brake it is usually louder. I've heard my rear bearings go before and they make a spronging-type sound, like a rubberband, and this is what I'm NOT hearing. I removed the front rotors and repacked them with grease -- no change. I did notice a roughness on the right spindle where the inner (smaller) bearings ride. There was some slight discoloration on the inner bearings on both sides, but they were not blue (a sign of over-heating and needing replacement) so I'm not sure if this is normal. I did remove the rims, but not the drums, on the rear and did not see any grease leaks and the castle nuts were still in their proper place. The axles seemed fine (moved in and out but not up and down, as per the manual). All rotors and drums rotated freely; they didn't make unusual sounds or grumbly-rumbly sounds. The front disc pads had even wear and had plenty of meat on them. Because of the pain it is to remove the drums I haven't done this to check the rear brakes, however, they were rebuilt several thousand miles ago and have not given me any problems so I don't suspect them. As a side note, Oregon has *many* truck scales on the side of the road (no, Phil and Al, not like dragon scales, but the scales that you use to weigh vehicles with ;) and Travis and I weighted the car and ourselves and it was 2850-lbs. (including about a 1/2 tank of gas). With the exception of the car show itself, my baby's trunk was full of gear (spare parts and tire, survival/first-aide equipment, floor jack and jack stand, tools and various fluids) and weighted down. Whether this extra weight contributed to the wear on the bearings or not I'm not sure. Ideas? I'm thinking of taking what little money I have and replacing the front spindles/bearings/rotors (I need to redrill the rotors anyway). Think they are my problem?
