Recently I posted a message about my German visitor and her observation that she has seen more Squarebacks in her two months in the U.S. than she has seen in two years in Hanover, Germany. Reply: Yeah, it is true, I just got back from Eruope where I saw 3 type 3s. Two squares, and one fastback. I was in Germany visiting a friend of mine, and, even after showing him a photo, he still thought it was only produced for the US. He worked at the VW factory in Wolfsburg this summer, and still had no idea. The ones I saw were in Sweden, France, and Greece. The Swedish ones were prized for their wonderful rear traction for the off road race called a "Folk Race" in NynŠshamn near Stockholm. They basically drove them as fast as possible while smashing them into eachother. It smelled really bad. In France, I saw a white Squareback always parked in front of Notre Dame. Very rusted with lots of duct tape, but it did remind me of home. (My '71 is mostly rust free, only minor spots) The one in Greece was hidden under a tarp in the country side near the towns of Kalithea and Klitoria. I was rather surprised they had them down there. Other than that, none exist, in my opinion. Only little gems hidden away by someone who truly knew their value. BTW, I am new to the list and live in San Jose, CA. Mine's blue and stock, but I'd love to do what Toby has done to the engine and transmission. Toby, when you are back, please drop me an email and tell me how much it cost, and how reliable your trip was. Thanks, Steve. PS- there are lots of t3s here. Mostly '67-73squares. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much? Digest! mailto:type3-d-request@vwtype3.org Subj=subscribe
