You have tested most of the right things and they seem fine. Time to move on. Have you measured the system voltage at medium RPM? The best thing to do is to have a friend measure the voltage across the battery when the engine is warm and the car is cruising down the highway. > i fitted a new (used), working distributor; trigger contacts ok, timing > set. all electrical connections seem good. i don't always have a perfect > seal around all 4 intake air distributor pipes, *but*, i'm fairly sure > this problem appeared before they became worn. can i silicone (or > something else?) these as a stop-gap/means of testing? Are both the vacuum and mechanical advance mechanisms on the dist working? Don't worry about the seals on the intake air distributor pipes. They do not cause this kind of problem. In fact the only problem they can cause on our FI is an idle speed that can't be adjusted low enough. They are often blamed, however; you just have to ignore those.
