Re: [T3] ok...now I'm in trouble

Charlie=> I've caught the "darkside" bug.

Well, having *raised* your frontend to improve the car's functionality,
I'd say your case isn't an especially serious one. You may recover.

=> maybe something along the 1776 cc range. I like my fuel injected
=> setup and dispise working on carbs.

If you want a 1776, say goodbye to your stock FI. Won't work.

=> My car is my daily driver and it could probbaly only be laid up for 2
=> weeks at the most.

This isn't much time for a complete repaint. What shape is the body in?
Are you thinking of just a quick mask-and-shoot job?

=> how much can a stock tranny handle?

Guys in my club are drag-racing 2.0L+ Type 1s with stock transaxles.
They're pushing the limits, but I don't think the stock unit will
present any problems for a reliable daily driver.

=> I wish I could intern (or whatever) under the likes of Jim or Steve.

Great, come on over, I've got plenty of work for you!

=> Any particular after market engine brands I should look for/stay away
=> from?

Yup, stay away from all of 'em. If you want an engine done right,
particularly if you want to go beyond stock, find a machinist who knows
his stuff, a builder who knows more, and the resources to pay them well.
You can get lucky, but a crate engine is an unknown quantity put
together by people who can't care about the results anywhere near as
much as you do. Where are you in analog space? A fellow member may be
able to point you to a good shop.

=> Should I find an old 1600 bug engine and just rebuild/machine it?

That could work in a real pinch, but you should first try to find a T3
engine that hasn't been redone before and rebuild *that*, perhaps from
one of those parts cars that the guy's selling off so cheap (good
score!). The case differences are small but important, imho.
