An oil filter is never placed on the suction side of the oil pump. The danger of starving the oil pump due to a clogged filter is too great, even worse than no filter at all. What I would sugest is to install one of the old fashioned bypass oil filters. This type of filter does not filter all the oil each pass but filters a small amount of oil at a time, and does a much more thorough job of it. My 53 chevy had one on it and it had a roll of toilet paper in it ( a fram cartrige was available ). The oil in that truck was cleaner than any vehicle I've owned. The bypass type of system can be installed by T-ing off the Oil pressure sender then returning the oil to the crankcase just about anywhere. I would suggest tapping the alloy part of the oil breather casting. (where the generator stand goes in a T1) And your right about the hassle of installing a full flow on a type three- the istallation winds up having way too many fittings to get the oil out from the back side of the fan housing-- this leads to a guaranteed leak as vibration loosens the fittings.
