In this case the T stands for Transporter, not type. So there are no type 3 busses, but there ARE T3 busses. I don't know when the generations changed. The pancake engine used in busses was a type 4 engine, never a type three engine, and was introduced in 72. The older style of engine continued to be sold in other markets long after that, but was not sold in type 2s in the US after 71.
