Hey Dan,
sorry to bother you.... I read a post of yours on the old archived
list at type3.org ....
I'm having problems possibly with the injection system and pump on my
'73 back... so I figure if I'm gonna spend all that money a new pump
and injectors (blech!) I might as well just switch to carbs... which I
wanna do anyway....
I have a few questions.... what do you suggest?...
how do I do it...(sorry so broad) I want to do after market....
probably duel webers.....
I'm new at all this stuff however and rather that spend weeks
searching those archives do you know where I can get some good info on
how to do this... I don't even know how all that will fit in there!
thanks....

Rob, ( . . kinda a long one, sit back a bit . . . :)
Thanks for the questions . . .

Although the factory FI system is difficult to understand AT FIRST, it really
is the best of the two, unless you actually have to REPLACE a part or two. A
new pump (not 'used' ) runs $200 - $300, a brain, rebuilt (only type still
available) - up to $600. So the replacement parts costs are quite dear. The
good news is that the OEM parts last forever, or at least close to it.
A new set of carbs on the other hand, are a real bitch to get 'jetted'
correctly, but when done so, are as effective, often more ecconomical, and
can be more easily used on a 'modified' engine .

Depends completely on engine specs.(size/CR/exhaust/usable RPMs desired/etc)

Lots of books (specifically about VW engines) , 'GOOD' suppliers (Gene Berg,
etc), here of course, and your local VW Guru. As for what fits . . . not alot
in a TIII . . . dual singles mostly (34ICTs, Baby Dells, ect), and a few very
expensive dual dual kits.

. . . listen to the masses . . if your FI is indeed repairable, study and
learn what VW, in their most knowledgeable wisdom, put on the car, it really
is an easy to master system, and can be 'tuned' for a performance engine
(about that another time) . . .
Remember, VW learned alot over 20+ years, and 5+ million cars. Trust them.
Hope I helped a bit,

(yes, it has carbs . . . for now - I'm having the FI system runners, etc.
powder coated)
