A question for the welders of the list: How is sheet metal measured? I know there are various 'gauges' but what do they represent? I understand wire gauges and VDO gauges (just kidding :) and AN hose fittings (like the # following the AN represents 16ths of an inch). In my quest for a welder and looking at all the options available I see some can weld 24-gauge and some 26-gauge all the way up to 5/16". I'm guessing that the larger the gauge number the thinner the metal, right? And, more importantly, what gauge of metal is used on our cars?
