Variant rhymes with Valiant; and it's the reason for your confusion. VW introduced the Variant to the US in the early 60's; shortly after Chrysler had introduced it's Valiant. VW thought there'd be too much confusion, so they changed the designation to simply 'Squareback' in the US.
