How about a '71 fuel injected VW-yellow squareback. It does run & drive. In fact, I drove it from central OH to northwest IN. (Yes, I'm in Indiana.) Let me give you the bad news first. 1. Both front fenders need heavy work or replacement. The right side is worse than the left. Looks like a previous owner slowly rear-ended someone or somebody backed into the poor T3Ó. As in, the fenders are slightly crumpled around the lights & the backs of the fenders have had a good bit of cosmetic work done. 2. The front floorpans are rusted through in several places. The genius previous owners "repaired" this by placing cardboard over the holes, thereby trapping moisture & dirt to do further damage. They are still repairable by welding in some patch panels, but it all depends on how far you want to go with the resto. Suffice it to say, these aren't compromising the structural integrity of the car. 3. The front suspension needs another piece on the left side. It's the snubber bracket that limits up travel of the spindle. What I would probably do to repair this is replace the entire front suspension, but it drives fine like it is now. 4. Odometer reads somewhere around 70k or 80k. (It's parked about 5 miles from here in a hangar at the airport.) I'm fairly certain it has rolled over--the odometer, not the car! Good news, 1. Except for the fenders, very straight body, no rust. Only a couple very smooth dings, easily tapped out. 2. Excellent engine--no oil leakage, blowage or usage. Generator puts out well. Electronic fuel injection is worry free. 3. No problems with the tranny. Clutch will need replacement soon, but very driveable if you don't try to beat Corvettes off the line. 4. Brakes stop well. Master cylinder fine. One of the front rotors gives a pulse. It could probably be turned out. 5. Interior 9/10. Serious! It's gorgeous. Definitely a major reason I bought the car. There is the ubiquitous crack by the center speaker extending from the speaker to the windshield, but it is very narrow--not something you'd feel like you HAD to fix right away for a daily driver. Actually, it's hard to notice unless you're looking for it. Typical black vinyl seats, excellent condition front & back. Great carpet. The pad over the engine compartment in the luggage area needs replaced though. Fixtures, knobs, seatbelts are in good condition. You won't be nickel & dimed to death on the little stuff. 6. Windows are all in great shape. Weather stripping doesn't look like it's been abused for 27 years. It looks like a grandma driven, garage kept square until about 5 years ago probably. I know it sat outside for a year & a half before I bought it. A high school kid drove it until it wouldn't run one time & he just let it sit. I brought new gas & it fired right up. I had to splice in a section of brake line where the cardboard floor panel repair had allowed corrosion. New brake fluid & a bleed job & we drove it home. Any questions, email me or call at 219-477-3898. Oh, I bought it as a simple resto for my wife. We just don't have time to do it & even though it's inside I don't want it to just sit & slowly die. It needs a good home. If you want a daily local driver that you can restore bit by bit, this is the one. We got a good deal on it, so we're not stuck on an inflated price just because it's a collector's. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
