Chris: > I am in a position to buy a 65 Fastback. The original owner said that there > were only EIGHT (8) made, but i am a bit sceptical. I'm afraid not. Maybe he was trying to suggest that there was a rather low number imported into the U.S., but I still don't think that few. The oldest cars I've seen are '63 and '64 Fastbacks and Squarebacks. Anyone out there, would '63's be the first available model year? In my travels I've seen very few '63's through '65's. I've probably viewed hundreds of Type 3's and the majority have been '68 and later. It might be interesting to get a count on the numbers of each model year people have seen over the years they've been in the VW hobby. Numbers I've seen (Roughly, of course) '63-Few '64-Few '65-Few '66-More, but not many '67-More, but not many '68-A lot '69-A lot '70-Most '71-Most '72-A lot, not as many though '73-Few The Type 3 was released during the 1962 Berlin Auto show, as I recall, and was preceeded by a lot of secrecy about what VW would come up with next. Heinz Nordoff, then CEO of VW, the man who was very much responsible for bringing up VW from WW II rubble on the management side, really pushed the development of the Type 3. If you ever see picture of his funeral at Wolfsburg you can see many Notchbacks in the procession. (Along with some strangley modified late 60's single cabs as well.) Just my two cents. Jon.
