Hi all, I started in on my transmission swap today. It started out with a pleasant surprise! The replacement tranny came out of a '74 Beetle, and Jim A. tells me that there are some compatibility problems with this combination. I pulled the tranny out of storaged, and noticed that it has a removable right side cover plate! Hey--that can't be a '74. It has that guide sleeve for the throwout bearing, so it had to be at least a '71. Its serial number begins with AH, so Bentley says that it had to have been made by July of '72. Cool! The gear ratios should therefore also match the current unit, instead of having the geared-down '74 ratios. I spent over half an hour mangling the input shaft seal--and not succeeding in removing it. Phoned a friend who's done it in the past, and was enlightened by his advice: go to Sears or the FLAPS and buy a seal puller for $5. Check--I'll do that tomorrow. Crawled under the car to start scoping things out. Removed the heater cables & the hoses to the body. Loosened 1/3 of the inner CV bolts. The rear engine carrier bolts all looked really rusty, but the nuts turned just fine--cool! Can I replace them with common metric stainless bolts that are on the shelf at my local hardware store, or do they need to be of some special high quality? I shall continue to plug away at it tomorrow evening; I'm expecting to do the bulk of the work on Saturday. It doesn't look like it'll be too bad of a job! (Famous last words.) Wish me luck... -Greg '69 & '71 Squarebacks '63 Beetle
