Shocks, valves, and RPM's

Hello all,
Today I have a few questions. First in order, shocks. How do you know how
old they are. I know the older cars don't have the softest rides (at least
vw's), but I am hitting those bumps real hard. Actually, when I think about,
I am going slow it just feels really hard. How much do shocks go for (low
quality-High quality). I would like a soft ride, at least comfortable. How
hard are they to replace. I have a floor jack and all of that stuff and can
borrow most tools from friends.

Second, can valves be the cause of rich fuel mixture? It seems that however
hard I try I just can't get the engine to run without puffing out black smoke.
I have done the timing...adjusted the carb about 30 times and nothing seems to
work. Could it be that I just need a good valve adjustment?

Finally, I saw in a magazine that you can see how high your rpm is by
connecting it to the carb and using a tach dwell meter. What part of the carb
do you hook the clamps to? Just wondering..thought it would be neat to watch
the rpms at idle (don't ask why)
