Crossthreaded Spark Plug Holes can be fixed! My 73 T is living proof. Which cylinder is it? Mine was #3 kind of hard to get to. Make sure your engine is stone cold before you begin. Remove all obstructions like hoses and wires. 1) Go to a very good auto parts house or tool store and purchase a 14mm spark plug thread restorer and a pack of 14mm (3/8 long) threaded sleeves (you'll need only one). Don't forget a tube of locktite (Red strength). $20 for thread restorer. $5 for sleeves. 2) Take out old plug - coat thread restorer tool "tap" with oil or grease to pick up shavings. Insert into damaged spark plug hole - screw it in with even and steady pressure. Make sure piston is not at the top - the tool with hit it! screw in until it is beyond the grooves of the tool - when you see the tool you will know what I mean. It goes pretty deep and gets pretty hard to turn - you are making new threads it is suppose to be hard. 3) Back out "Tap" tool and clean your new threads with a clean shop rag. Screw sleeve on end of new spark plug apply locktite to outside of sleeve. This will lock the sleeve to the threaded wall of spark plug hole - so it does not leak or back out. 4) Insert plug with the sleeve on it into the spark plug hole and screw in carefully! Restore the arrangement of wires and hoses. Wait about 30 minutes for the locktite to begin to cure before you start the engine. Start engine and listen carefully for any compression leaks at the plug. I personally did not race it up - I let it idle for a while - once it was pretty warm - I raced it up to see if any problems arose. Worked Great for me. - If this does not work the next step is a "helicoil". I can't help there. I have the tools and extra sleeves - Let me know! I could send to you and let you use them - if you can't find them in you area. 1973 T-III Gary Fisher garyf@ttc-inc.com -----Original Message----- From: Soap Duck [SMTP:SoapDuck@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, May 20, 1998 8:13 AM To: Fisher, Gary Subject: Re: Old and Tired Update Can you fix crossthreaded spark plug holes?
